Project-Based Sourcing: Pre-Qualification of Suppliers for a Roll-to-Roll Vacuum Coating Line in China
A European company was evaluating potential suppliers in China for a roll-to-roll vacuum coating production line.
PTYI was engaged specifically for the pre-qualification stage of the sourcing process.
We conducted a China-side supplier search and initial qualification based on the technical and project requirements available at the time.

The assessment focused on factors such as:
- Relevant experience with roll-to-roll coating and vacuum coating equipment from China
- Manufacturing capabilities and the type of industrial equipment supplied
- Experience with comparable production systems or applications
- Technical capabilities and engineering resources
- Project experience and ability to undertake customised equipment projects
- Basic company and manufacturing information relevant to further evaluation
Where appropriate, PTYI communicated directly with potential suppliers in China to obtain information that was not readily available through public online sources.
The purpose was not to make a final supplier selection, but to filter the market and identify manufacturers that could reasonably proceed to the next stage of the client’s evaluation.
Project status
PTYI completed the pre-qualification assignment in December 2025.
The project remained at the solution and supplier evaluation stage at the completion of PTYI’s engagement. PTYI’s scope ended with the pre-qualification work and did not include subsequent supplier selection, commercial negotiation, equipment procurement, installation or project execution.
Why Project-Based Sourcing Matters

A supplier may appear relevant online while having limited experience with a particular process, application or type of customised production equipment. For overseas procurement teams, obtaining a clearer understanding of the actual China-side supplier landscape can therefore be an important first step before investing time in technical discussions, quotations or factory evaluations.
Through project-based sourcing support in China, PTYI helps overseas companies build a more informed starting point for specialised industrial procurement — particularly where technical requirements, customised machinery and supplier capabilities need to be considered together.
